Staph Infection Follow Up

It is possible to have a staph infection come back after it is cured. To prevent this from happening, follow your healthcare provider's directions while you have the infection, and use the following prevention tips to protect yourself, family members, or friends from infection:

Preventing Community-Associated Staph Infection:

  • Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered
  • Wash hands often
  • Avoid skin-to-skin contact
  • Don't share personal items like towels and razors
  • Sanitize linens like athletic clothes and towels
Preventing Healthcare-Associated Staph Infection:
  • Ask all hospital staff to wash their hands before touching you
  • Wash your own hands often
  • Ask to be bathed with disposable cloths treated with a disinfectant rather than with soap and water
  • Make sure that intravenous tubes and catheters are inserted and removed under sterile conditions
